My friend EL said the plane crashed at 72nd and York, which is three streets up from her apartment. Everyone is freaking out in New York. I just read elsewhere that terrorism is ruled out.

One Death Confirmed After New York Airplane Crash
9:00 am, 12 Oct 2006
The New York Fire Department has confirmed at least one death after an airplane crashed into a high rise apartment building in New York.
Witnesses reported seeing a huge fireball after a fixed wing airplane came down steeply from the sky and crashed into the high rise building on East 72nd Street and York Avenue, near the East River.
Initial reports suggested it may have been a helicopter, but witnesses and the Federal Aviation Administration say it was a light fixed wing plane that hit the building.
Heavy flames and smoke can be seen coming from the building on the East Side of Manhattan.
Dozens of fire trucks and hundreds of police are on the scene.
The US military has confirmed fighter aircraft have been deployed into the air over numerous United States cities, but are not saying which ones for security reasons.
NORAD says the aircraft are being deployed as a precaution.
A White House spokesperson says President Bush is aware of the incident and all indications at this stage are that it was an accident.
But White House officials say they are not in a position to rule anything in or out, including terrorism
There are no changes in the alert status at the White House.
