The Army began its recruiting year Oct. 1 with fewer signed up for basic training than in any year since it became an all-volunteer service in 1973, a top general said Wednesday.
Gen. William S. Wallace, whose duties as commander of Army Training and Doctrine Command include management of recruiting, told reporters at the Pentagon that the historic dip will make it harder to achieve the full-year recruiting goal — after just barely reaching it in the year ended Sept. 30.

“Army strong” is the theme of a campaign that the Army plans to announce formally today. The effort, with a budget estimated at $1.35 billion in the next five years, will appear in traditional media like television as well as nontraditional outlets like blogs, social networking Web sites and chat rooms.
The campaign is being produced by nine agencies, eight of them part of the McCann Worldgroup division of the Interpublic Group of Companies.

The Army is ending its best recruiting year since 1997 and expecting similar success in 2007, despite the weight of grim war news from Iraq, Army Secretary Francis Harvey said Thursday.
In an Associated Press interview, Harvey said the Army will enlist its 80,000th soldier on Friday, reaching its goal for the year with eight days to spare. That is a considerable turnaround from last year when the Army missed its target for the first time since 1999 and by the widest margin in more than two decades.

Did you see the story being floated that the U.S. Army is considering outsourcing Fort Belvoir as a propaganda tool? According to the Washington Post, the idea is to build a military theme park at the suburban Virginia fort, which is located just across the Potomac from that other theme park, Washington, DC.
The Army apparently is rationalizing the theme park concept as a device to help pay the costs of the Army museum already planned for Ft. Belvoir. And they're entertaining proposals from a Florida developer who imagines a Disney-like...
