US forces have stormed an Iranian consulate in the northern Iraqi town of Irbil and seized six members of staff.

The troops raided the building at about 0300 (0001GMT), taking away computers and papers, according to Kurdish media and senior local officials.

The US military would only confirm the detention of six people around Irbil.

Tehran said the attack violated all international conventions. It has summoned ambassadors from Switzerland, representing US interests, and Iraq.

A spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry described the...

A Swede by the name of Jonathan Lundqvist returned from Iran last month with a bundle of National Geographics, Economists, and Wallpapers purchased from a newsstand near Tehran University. Though these and other Western mags are permitted, they're heavily censored -- moreover, they're manually censored, by government readers who go through each copy and cover forbidden ladyparts with white stickers or black ink.

"I brought some magazines with me when I went back to Sweden from Iran. The thing was that I was very surprised to begin with when...

Israeli officials said Tuesday they were concerned that North Korea's reported nuclear test would set a dangerous precedent and encourage Iran to press ahead with its nuclear program.

Israel also feared North Korea would transfer materials and technology for the development of nuclear weapons to Iran, officials said.

"Nuclear capability in the hands of irresponsible undemocratic regimes is a world problem," said Miri Eisin, spokeswoman for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.

"We should remind ourselves that the North Koreans have already been...

Iran suggested on Monday that the United Nations headquarters be relocated from New York to a country other than the United States.

“The U.S. tries to pressure Iran in any way possible. We are convinced that considerations should be made regarding the United Nations which is based in this country”, government spokesman Gholam-Hossein Elham told reporters during his weekly press conference.

“Either the UN must be relocated from the U.S. and set up in a different country or the U.S.’s provisions in this regard must be limited so...

The International Atomic Energy Agency told the U.N. Security Council its inspectors have found new traces of enriched uranium in Iran.

The discovery marked the third instance that highly enriched uranium was found at an Iranian facility, but the IAEA said the nuclear fingerprint on the new discovery does not match that found on earlier samples, which the agency had concluded came from contaminated equipment from Pakistan, The New York Times reported Friday.

The 6-page IAEA report did not identify where the uranium might have originated...

The missile was called Sagheb, which means Piercing, but the report did not give the missile's range.

"Minutes ago it was launched from a submarine in the Persian Gulf and it hit the target," television reported.

Western nations have been watching developments in Iran's missile capabilities with concern amid a standoff over the country's nuclear program, which the...

“You don’t need Security Council authority to impose sanctions,” Ambassador John R. Bolton says.

With increasing signs that several fellow Security Council members may stall a United States push to penalize Iran for its nuclear enrichment program, Bush administration officials have indicated that they are prepared to form an independent coalition to freeze Iranian assets and restrict trade.

The strategy, analysts say, reflects not only long-standing U.S. frustration with the Security Council's inaction on Iran, but also the current...

Today on CNN, Seymour Hersh of the New Yorker, the one who mainstreamed the Abu Gahrib story, has confirmed with insiders that Bush and the Israeli Government planned months in advance that any incident, no matter how small, would ignite a broad and punishing response by Israel in a preemptive move to start a war with Iran. Bush's advanced plan actually included Israel destroying Hezbollah's missles as pre-cursor to an attack on Iran.
