A BBC investigation estimates that around $23bn may have been lost, stolen or just not properly accounted for in Iraq.

For the first time, the extent to which some private contractors have profited from the conflict and rebuilding has been researched by the BBC's Panorama using US and Iraqi government sources.

A US gagging order is preventing discussion of the allegations.

The order applies to 70 court cases against some of the top US companies.

While George Bush remains in the White House, it is unlikely the gagging orders will be...

On The Chris Matthews show, Richard Stengel, the managing editor of TIME gives us a chilling new report that the Pentagon is releasing about the serious head injuries our troops are sustaining in Iraq.

Stengel: When we got into the Iraq war we didn’t know how long it would last. When we got into the Iraq war we didn’t know how much it would cost. It’s lasted longer, it’s cost more than we ever expected. The real toll is coming out now. The Pentagon is releasing a report saying, one in five American serviceman and women who have been...

President Bush today vetoed a Congressionally-approved plan to expand children's health insurance. While the plan received enough Senate support to override the veto, it fell short in the House of Representatives.

Now, this isn't all about money: the President sees expansion as a step down the slippery slope to socialized medicine, and says it would help middle-class families who don't need it. But Bush also claimed that expansion is too expensive.

So let's put that expense in perspective: the difference between Congress's plan and the...

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced early Wednesday he had vetoed legislation that would have allowed Californians to vote on an advisory measure calling for President Bush to immediately withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq.

The Republican governor said in a statement that a proposed ballot measure on the war would further divide Californians as they go to the polls in the Feb. 5 presidential primary.

"There is no louder message Californians can send to Washington on the Iraq war than who should lead our nation," Schwarzenegger said....

Dick Cheney in a 1994 interview explaining how invading Iraq would lead to a "quagmire".

He makes several extremely salient and visionary points:

1. No one would support a US invasion, least of all important Arab allies. This would make it an unpopular American occupation;

2. In the absence of a strong central government, Iraq would essentially go to pieces, splintering along religious and ethnic lines; and

3. It would, to use his word, become a quagmire.

I guess someone could explain this away with some 9/11...

It is time for the United States to leave Iraq, without any more delay than the Pentagon needs to organize an orderly exit.

Like many Americans, we have put off that conclusion, waiting for a sign that President Bush was seriously trying to dig the United States out of the disaster he created by invading Iraq without sufficient cause, in the face of global opposition, and without a plan to stabilize the country afterward.

While Mr. Bush scorns deadlines, he kept promising breakthroughs — after elections, after a constitution, after...

US forces have stormed an Iranian consulate in the northern Iraqi town of Irbil and seized six members of staff.

The troops raided the building at about 0300 (0001GMT), taking away computers and papers, according to Kurdish media and senior local officials.

The US military would only confirm the detention of six people around Irbil.

Tehran said the attack violated all international conventions. It has summoned ambassadors from Switzerland, representing US interests, and Iraq.

A spokesman for Iran's foreign ministry described the...
