Israeli military prosecutors have announced they will not press charges over the army's use of cluster bombs during the war against Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon, actions that had been widely criticised by human rights organisations.
The announcement came as Israeli and Palestinian negotiating teams met here for the second time since the US-sponsored peace conference in Annapolis, Maryland.
Cluster bombs are not prohibited in warfare, but their use is criticised because they contain "bomblets" that explode over a wide area and may...

Israeli intelligence officials are in the U.S. trying to convince the Bush administration that Iran is still trying to develop nuclear weapons — contrary to the findings of a recent U.S. intelligence report, security officials said.
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, however, scolded a Cabinet minister on Sunday for his harsh, public criticism of the U.S. report.
The U.S. assessment, released earlier this month, concludes Iran halted its weapons development program in 2003 and that the program remained frozen at least through the middle of...

US Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns has signed a deal that will provide Israel with $30,000,000,000 of military aid over the next 10 years.
The Israeli prime minister, Ehud Olmert asked the US envoy to thank President George W Bush and the secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice, for their efforts in bringing about the accord.
It will see Washington transfer $30bn over the next decade, compared to $24bn over the past 10 years. The first payment of $2.55bn will be made in October 2008. Mr Burns called the aid package an "investment in...

Israel dropped phosphorous bombs on Lebanon this summer, its government has admitted for the first time. During the war, the Lebanese government accused Israel of dropping the controversial weapons. But Israel had previously claimed it only used the bombs, which cause severe chemical burns, to mark targets or territory.
For those that are not aware, Phosphorus weapons are a chemical weapon and a particularly nasty one at that...You know about chemical weapons, right? The type of weapons that are banned under the Chemical Weapons Convention....

Israeli officials said Tuesday they were concerned that North Korea's reported nuclear test would set a dangerous precedent and encourage Iran to press ahead with its nuclear program.
Israel also feared North Korea would transfer materials and technology for the development of nuclear weapons to Iran, officials said.
"Nuclear capability in the hands of irresponsible undemocratic regimes is a world problem," said Miri Eisin, spokeswoman for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
"We should remind ourselves that the North Koreans have already been...

Israel's army chief said Tuesday that he expected to pull his troops out of Lebanon by the weekend, which would meet a key requirement of the cease-fire that halted a 34-day war against Hezbollah guerrillas.
The withdrawal would complete the transfer of security responsibilities along Lebanon's southern border to the Lebanese army and a beefed-up U.N. peacekeeping force that has been deploying in the area.

A majority of Canadians believe U.S. foreign policy was one of the root causes that led to the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks, and Quebecers are quicker to criticize the U.S. administration for its international actions than other Canadians, a recent poll suggests.
Those conclusions are found in a newly released poll conducted by Léger Marketing for the Association for Canadian Studies.
The poll suggests that 77 per cent of Quebecers polled primarily blame American foreign policy for the Sept. 11 attacks. The results suggest 57 per cent in...

The UN's humanitarian chief has accused Israel of "completely immoral" use of cluster bombs in Lebanon.
UN clearance experts had so far found 100,000 unexploded cluster bomblets at 359 separate sites, Jan Egeland said.
Israel has repeated its previous insistence that munitions it uses in conflict comply with international law.
Earlier, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert rebuffed UN chief Kofi Annan's calls for a swift end to Israel's air and sea blockade of Lebanon.
After talks with Mr Annan, Mr Olmert said the siege would only be...

The resturant was inaugurated last week by the city’s top officials and celebrities. The restaurant owner said he had not realised the Nazi theme would upset people. "It’s just that we wanted to give a different name. We wanted a good campaign. That’s the main reason. Nothing else,"
Daniel Zonshine, Israel's consul general in Mumbai, said he had been receiving calls from concerned and irate Jews across the world.
He added that there was considerable anger over the eatery's name in Israel and even in Germany, after people had learnt...

Italy, which is expected to lead a U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon, will be unable to send troops if Israel "keeps shooting," Italian Foreign Minister Massimo D'Alema said on Tuesday.
"From Israel, we expect a renewed effort, this time truly binding, to respect the ceasefire," D'Alema said. "It's fair to expect that Hizbollah put down their weapons, but we cannot send our troops to Lebanon if the (Israeli) army keeps shooting."
