Japan's agricultural minister died Monday after reportedly hanging himself just hours before he was to face questioning in parliament in a political scandal, officials said.
The death comes just ahead of important elections in July, and as support for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's Cabinet is plunging.

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake was measured at the city of Toyama, Japan, Sunday, according to the National Geological Survey, and a television network said no serious damage was reported.
A tsunami advisory was issued for coastal areas of Ishikawa. The Japan Meteorological Agency said waves of as much as 0.5 meter could be generated by the quake.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe ordered government agencies to confirm damage or injuries resulting from the quake, Kyodo News Agency said.

A farm in western Japan's Takahashi city, Okayama Prefecture, saw 17 of its chickens die in the last two days in maybe another bird flu case, the Japanese agricultural ministry said on late Saturday.
The highly virulent H5N1 strain of the bird flu virus was confirmed earlier in the day by the ministry in the second case in a month in southern Japan's Miyazaki Prefecture.
Earlier this month, some 4,000 chickens died from H5N1 in another town in Miyazaki, about 900km southwest of Tokyo.

A shark with the ugly proportions of the pre-historic era has surfaced near Japan offering a rare view of this denizen of the deep.
The "Frilled Shark" is hardly ever seen because its habit is 600 metres or more below the ocean surface.
The creature's fear factor doesn't depend on it's color or shape or even it's size...
