North Korea said Tuesday the United Nations effectively declared war on the country when it imposed sanctions for the North's nuclear test.
North Korea wants "peace but is not afraid of war," the North's Foreign Ministry said in a statement carried by the official Korean Central News Agency.
The U.N. Security Council "resolution cannot be construed otherwise than a declaration of a war," the ministry said, calling the sanctions "a product of the U.S. hostile policy toward" North Korea.
The ministry warned that if anyone used the U.N....

U.S. spy agencies confirmed North Korea's nuclear test on Monday, even as Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice declared that U.N. sanctions prove the world is united in opposing Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions.

Israeli officials said Tuesday they were concerned that North Korea's reported nuclear test would set a dangerous precedent and encourage Iran to press ahead with its nuclear program.

The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition his name not be used, because he was not authorized to talk about the sensitive information to the media.

U.S. and South Korean troops began military exercises on Monday dubbed Ulchi Focus Lens that are aimed at testing command structures and communications.
The annual exercises have been held without incident since they began in 1975 and the North usually brands them as a prelude to invasion and nuclear war.
But the drills this year are being held with tensions high on the...

South Korea has arrested a suspected North Korean spy trying to enter the country at a time when tensions are running high on the peninsula, Yonhap news agency has reported.
The arrest report comes after North Korea defied international warnings and test fired seven missiles on July 5. News reports from the United States last week said North Korea may be preparing to conduct its first nuclear weapons test.
South Korean intelligence agencies were not immediately available to comment on the arrest report.
The source said the National...
