Some 30 non-governmental organisations in Niger said overnight they are going to sue the United States for nearly two billion dollars for "unfairly accusing" Niger of selling uranium to the late Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

"Our lawyers are about to file a lawsuit against the US calling for damages of about 1000 billion CFA francs ($2.42 billion dollars) for the harm suffered" by the country, Moustapha Kadi, president of the Collective of organisations in Niger defending the right to energy (CODDAE).

The lawsuit by the collective will...

When the book was released, Central Intelligence Agency analysts reportedly pored over it searching for clues into Mr. Hussein’s mind.

But they could just as easily have turned to “The Old Man and the Sea,” which Mr. Hussein had first read as a young man in a different prison: “A man can be destroyed not defeated.”

In that spirit, he urges his followers to be fierce and noble, saying:

We never kneel or bend when attacking
But we even treat our enemy with honor.

From Hussein, a Florid Farewell to the Iraqi People
By MARC SANTORA and JOHN F. BURNS
BAGHDAD, Jan. 3 — The dictator sat alone in his cell, three years in American custody. His beard had gone gray, his sons were dead and the gallows were being readied.

Saddam Hussein in those final days turned to poetry, so often his source of solace in times of difficulty, inspired by his vision of himself as inseparably tied to those he led.

The poem, “Unbind It,” is his rallying call to be sounded from the grave.

It is a...

Iraq’s national security adviser told on Wednesday that three individuals have been arrested in connection with a video of Saddam Hussein’s execution that was leaked.

“I can officially now confirm the arrest of three individuals in the case of the execution of Saddam Hussein,” said Iraqi national security adviser Mowaffak al-Rubaie.

The arrests came after the announcement that officials were interrogating the person suspected of recording Saddam’s hanging via a mobile phone.

“The person who filmed the execution process has...

U.S. officials reportedly tried to delay last week's execution of Saddam Hussein, fearing it would fuel perceptions the death of the former Iraqi dictator was more about Shiite retribution and less about justice.

Those fears seemed borne out by an amateur recording of Hussein's last moments.

It was a caution that fell on deaf ears, however, as Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki, a Shiite, was determined to put Hussein to death before the beginning of the Eid al-Adha holiday.

Baghdad, Dec 30 Former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein was executed early Saturday morning.

Saddam's death came four days after an Iraqi court upheld the death sentence handed down after he was convicted for the 1982 massacre in the Iraqi city of Dujail, according to information based on Iraqi television reports.

The hanging took place more than three years after Saddam's regime was toppled by a US-led invasion and after a lengthy Iraq judicial process that resulted in his conviction and sentencing in November.

Since receiving the...

An Iraqi appeals court on Tuesday upheld Saddam Hussein's death sentence for crimes against humanity and said he should hang within 30 days.

Human rights activists condemned his trial as seriously flawed and called on the government not to carry out the sentence, which comes amid raging violence between Saddam's fellow Sunni Arabs and majority Shi'ites.

Sunni Arab leaders reacted angrily to the ruling, saying it was politically motivated by Saddam's former enemies now in power in a U.S.-backed Shi'ite-led national unity...

An Iraqi special tribunal today convicted Saddam Hussein of crimes against humanity and sentenced him to death by hanging for the brutal repression of a Shiite town in the 1980’s.

As the chief judge read aloud the verdict, a defiant Mr. Hussein shouted, “Long live the people! Long live the Arab nation! Down with the spies!” He thrust his finger emphatically into the air as he spoke, then repeatedly chanted, “God is great!”

The judge, Raouf Rasheed Abdul Rahman, tried to calm Mr. Hussein down. “There’s no point,” Mr....

Cheney: WMD or not, Iraq invasion was correct

President Bush would have ordered an invasion of Iraq even if the CIA had told him that Saddam Hussein had no weapons of mass destruction, Vice President Dick Cheney said Sunday.

In the build-up to the U.S. invasion in 2003, Bush and other administration leaders argued that Saddam should be removed from power because he had stockpiles of chemical and biological weapons and was actively seeking to build a nuclear weapon.

Subsequent investigations concluded that he did not have such weapons, and in an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the...

Bush's final gamble: giving Iraq a dictator?

The news was buried in a New York Times story last week but it confirmed what others in the Washington chattering classes have been observing lately.

The context is that the White House has been inviting outsiders in to the Oval Office to discuss strategy in Iraq. The new chief of staff Josh Bolten has apparently been trying to pierce the intellectual cocoon in which the president comfortably resides. Bush family consigliere James Baker has already been asked to rescue the president’s failed Iraq policy.

But last week the new nugget:...
