A life-long friend of Steve Irwin today told how the Crocodile Hunter pulled a deadly stingray barb from his own chest before losing consciousness and dying.

Friend John Stainton said he had viewed footage of his friend's last moments and the images were "shocking".

News that Australia's own crocodile hunter Steve Irwin has died had Web site traffic in overdrive today with many news sites operating on low bandwidth mode due to high traffic.

The spike spread across a number of news sites as Internet users were unsure if the sad news was a possible hoax.

Steve Irwin, the quirky Australian naturalist who won worldwide acclaim, has died in a marine accident off Australia’s northeast coast, local media reported on Monday.
